Cairn

FIELD  NOTES  (OCT '23)

We were in Scotland recently and visited the Clava Cairns near Inverness. Clava Cairns is described as "one of Scotland’s most evocative prehistoric sites... the exceptional remains of an ancient cemetery, set on a terrace above the River Nairn." - Historic Environment Scotland

This Bronze Age site is about 4,000 years old and extremely well-preserved with many different types of standing stones and what is assumed to be burial cairns. There is much still not known about the cairns - whether they were used for burial or other sacred purposes, especially since very few bone fragments or other remnants have been found. What were the stones marking? What rituals took place here? Who were the cairns meant to house?

All I know is that, 4,000 years later, the stones are standing still, eerie and silent, possessing a powerful pull to uncover the mystery.
